Shift to electric? What the future of no-idle technology has in store for the trucking industry
UNION CITY, Calif. — (April 30, 2008) — Glacier Bay, Inc., internationally recognized leader in advanced thermal and power management technology, announces the launch of ClimaCab®, a no-idle HVAC solution for Class 8 sleeper cabs. The pure electric system uses zero fuel, requires zero maintenance, and has zero emissions.
Glacier Bay specifically designed ClimaCab to address issues crippling the industry — soaring diesel fuel prices and tough legislation restricting engine idling.
"Everyone's looking for solutions, and electric technology has the greatest potential for savings," stated Mr. Kyle Houston, ClimaCab Product Manager. "Glacier Bay's eighteen years experience in power and thermal management gives ClimaCab a distinct edge. Our advanced control system provides a complete solution to the no-idle problem. Fleets using ClimaCab already report significantly improved fuel economy."
Setting a new industry standard
ClimaCab's high voltage, continuously variable speed compressors and blowers deliver 8,000 BTUs/hr of air conditioning for over 12 hours. The self-contained unit was designed for maximum driver comfort and requires zero maintenance.
ClimaCab responds continuously and in real time to external temperature changes and load requirements. The system recharges during normal truck operation and is compatible with 135 amp alternators. Improved battery performance provides longer life, and its Start Assist™ feature helps eliminate jump starts by recharging fully depleted starter batteries.
A unique approach
ClimaCab uses radiant heat transfer — a unique application developed by Glacier Bay specifically for the trucking industry. Installed over the bunk, ClimaCab Radiant Heat Panels warm the driver directly, offering enhanced comfort while using minimal battery power. Mr. Houston noted, "Extensive testing confirms this is the most effective way to heat a sleeper with four batteries in below freezing temperatures. Drivers tell me they've never had a better nights sleep." For customers preferring fuel-fired heaters, ClimaCab offers this option as well.
